Hamilton - The Tour
5 out of 5 Stars
What a surprise to find that the Hamilton touring company turned its sights on South Florida at the same time as our December timeshare week in Delray. With a little cunning and a lot of luck, we were able to score two tickets to the sold-out production at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.
Full disclosure: we are full-fledged, over the top Hamilton devotees with multiple Broadway viewings. So obviously we were curious. Would the on-the-road production live up to the Broadway standards we are accustomed to? The answer is clear.
Yes!
Hamilton on tour doesn’t just live up to the Broadway production, it is the Broadway production. And it comes complete with the full stage set and that famous turntable. The entire experience was nothing short of thrilling.
Nik Walker as Aaron Burr reaches the high bar set by Daniel Breaker who is in the current New York City production. No small task. He brings charisma, charm, humor, and menace to the role. His rendition of “Wait for It” is the finest we have ever seen.
Joseph Morales reprises his starring role as Alexander Hamilton from the Chicago production. His performance reminds us of Lin-Manuel Miranda himself in the role. Mr. Morales, though significantly smaller in stature, creates a formidable foil to Mr. Walker’s Burr.
Other standout performances are Shoba Narayan as Eliza Hamilton, Ta’Rea Campbell as Angelica Schuyler, Nyla Sostre as Maria Reynolds, and Fergie L. Philippe as James Madison. And we mustn’t forget mad King George! Jon Patrick Walker brings extra energy, humor, and zaniness to the role making it his own.
The evening was all the more special because our dear friend, Michele, had tickets to the show, along with her delightful friend Linda. Their good company and enthusiasm added to the joy of the evening. We would be remiss if we didn’t highlight the beautiful Broward Center for the Performing Arts. It was wonderful to see this elegant facility with plenty of bartenders, bathrooms, lobby space, and festively clad patrons.
No doubt, we have more Hamilton viewings in our future. This particular one in South Florida will always be a standout.
Why We Went: We were eager to see a production from the Hamilton tour.
There are two touring companies currently performing Hamilton around the country. We saw the “Philip” cast. The other group is named the “Angelica” cast. Click this link to see if the tour will be in your area.
