Harry Clarke

4.5 out of 5 Stars

It is unusual in the small Off-Broadway setting to see a show with dozens of characters, numerous transglobal locations, and almost continuous scene changes. Such is the magic of theater that all of this is accomplished on a small stage with two or three props and a single actor. Harry Clarke is powerhouse theater in every sense of the word. True, as stated this is a one-man show but what is clearly evident in its viewing is that we are seeing an extraordinary team performance – actor, playwright, and director.

Billy Crudup is all grown up from his days as lead singer of the fictional band in the film Almost Famous. His performance here is an exposition of his acting skills. His transitions between characters – young to old, male to female, west to east coast, American to European (as well as others to be revealed) is smooth to the point of being almost invisible and nothing short of astonishing.

Then there is the fantastic story! Give credit to playwright David Cale who is a prolific writer, songwriter, and actor.  Mr. Cale has written lyrics for songs sung by artists including Elvis Costello and Debbie Harry. In addition to writing the play, he wrote the music used in Harry Clarke.  To get a better sense of Harry Clarke’s creator, dabble for a few minutes in his solo performances on YouTube.

Leigh Silverman directs this production and she makes the most of Billy Crudup’s acting chops and David Cale’s brilliant script.  We know her from directing the breathtaking On The Exhale starring Marin Ireland (another one-person show). Ms. Silverman is Tony Award and Obie nominated and is certainly well established in the directing world.  At this point, we will see any project she is involved with.

This production was first staged and completed its twice-extended, sold-out run at the Vineyard Theatre (where we saw it). Its popularity has returned it to the Minetta Lane Theatre where it runs until May 13. Paired with a bite at the Minetta Tavern, you are assured an extraordinary outing.
