Fiddler on the Roof

A revival of Fiddler on the Roof . . . sounds crazy, no?  Who could imagine that Fiddler could successfully return to Broadway without Zero Mostel?  That question is answered in the opening moments of the show.  Danny Burstein as Tevye is sensational.  His creation of the role is inspired without mimicry.  Fiddler on the Roof is Tevye’s show but Jessica Hecht’s Golde plays a powerful supporting role providing structure and heart to the family . . . the Mama.

It would be easy to fall into the “been there, done that” rut.  But trust me, this production is new, fresh and vital.  Much ado has been made of the new choreography, and having now seen the production, I clearly see why.  Every step is vibrant and alive and provides the rhythm to this well-paced performance.  The scenery is stark because the landscape was stark.  Its inhabitants provide the life in the village of Anatevka.  As the curious traveler wanders onto the scene to open the show, he is surrounded by nothing but a sign with the village name.  Life is brought to the show and is ultimately withdrawn by the characters that are all introduced in the first number.  The songs we all know are refreshed and glitter against the black background of this poor village.  The story plays out before us in an arc that is smooth as silk.

It was our good fortune to see Fiddler with Aunt Sally and Aunt Ellen.

This is a family show in the truest sense of the term.  Appropriately, this viewing was with our beloved visiting Aunts, Ellen and Sally, who added warmth and energy to this family event. To us and our good fortune, there’s a new production of Fiddler on the Roof that is must-see theater.  L’Chaim!!

Side Notes:

Pre-theater dinner was at Orso, our favorite restaurant in the theater district.  Consistency is the word with a warm environment, excellent service, and a delicious Italian menu.  Our group enjoyed a fine kale and romaine salad, pasta bolognese, and perfectly roasted chicken.  Plus the olives in the martini are not to be missed.  Book your reservations as soon as possible.  This place is a favorite of many for good reason.
