Jersey Boys

I have lost count of what viewing of Jersey Boys this was.  I think it was the fourth.  Like the Four Seasons' singles that we wore out on the jukebox, this music and story are worthy of repeat  performances.  It is likely that most of the susceptible population have, at this point, seen the show.  I am writing this brief review to simply remind everyone that this story of four "stand up guys" still stands up.  Now in its 10th year, many of the original actors have been replaced.  This in no way detracts from the show but rather makes evident that "Broadway's got talent."

This was a four couple outing and birthday celebration.  It seems that Saturday afternoon performances, in particular, are revival meetings for New Jersey residents.  It is as much a party as it is a performance.  Unlike many of the reviews in our blog that are closing as we type, I suspect Jersey Boys will be on the scene for years to come.  It is that kind of story.

Nostalgia is a powerful emotion.  Hearing these songs has almost a time machine quality bringing us back to our youth.  As Frankie Valli so perfectly sums it up at the end of the play "It was all great.  But the first time the four of us made that sound, our sound . . . when everything dropped away and all there was was the music, that was the best." This party plays eight times a week and you're invited!

Why we went:  After viewing several dark stories in a row, we were ready for a celebration!

Side Notes:

We celebrated the birthday girl with pre-theater brunch at  Benoit located on West 55th.  This is an Alain Ducasse French bistro that makes you feel like you have stepped into Paris, complete with charming waiters with French accents.  The eight of us enjoyed delicious selections from the menu that celebrates French cuisine with a modern approach.  The food, service, and atmosphere were . . . magnifique!
